As I come from a middle-class background these things are very common. The guilt of not being able to buy a smartphone and a piece of jewellery for mom, a good vehicle for dad, and whatnot

nahh man, i bought many expensive gifts for people but only guilt is you cannot always give gifts, best gift is your time for ones you love

I used to spend alot on people, and with some misfortune when i wasn't able to do it anymore. I felt guilty myself, i felt as though i don't deserve to be with certain people anymore and let it get the best of me. Thou it actually turned out to be true and alot of those "friends" turned on me. I suggest do it but be selective of people and don't make the gifts a leverage.
