Ok so for the past 2 years I have been struggling with an eating disorder and recently I have been m aking some progress on my recovery journey and I've gained some weight. It's actually been taking a huge mental toll on me since my weight gain is what got me into this mess in the first place. Now at the beginning of this school year, so last September-October I made a new friend that I have a lot in common w and really like (not romantically) well call her Jesse (not her real name obvi) we've been getting closer lately and talking more. Jesse and her bf r both rlly big on fitness and she's been talking abt weight alot to me. Now let it be know Jesse 1 has a much smaller frame than me being shorter and alot more naturally skinny than me. And 2, knows full dam well about my ED. Hell at a pool party she comforted me after I ran off after having a panic attack from being in a bathing suit. Lately though she's been really hammering home how she feels like her stomach isn't muscular enough or just talking abt her body and showing it to me. I've tried to softly change the subject when this happens but the other day she called me and said "I'm thinking I should start skipping breakfast from now on". All of this has been taking a toll on me and making me dive further into my ED. idk what to do because it's clear she might be going through something too but I'm far from the person to help her. Idk how to ask her to... stop? Like I can't just tell her to stop talking abt that to me cuz ion wanna hear abt her problems. What should I do? ... read more

One it sounds like she's developing an eating disorder herself, two you need to let her know it's effecting you mentally and causing you to go backwards, three talk to her about getting help, I'm hoping you're getting help for yourself and lastly until she sees help for herself you need to distance yourself from her until you are in a place where things like this doesn't effect you and make you go backwards

You should talk to her about how you feel, outside of one of the times she brings it up. You should also tell a trusted adult about this situation, as well as your own issues with food, so that you can receive help. I know it's really scary to talk about, but people can't help you if they don't know you're struggling. Even if you are receiving help with the ED, it seems like you might need more emotional support, if the weight gain is still super hard for you. I'm proud of you for trying to stay healthy, it's super hard to do!
