A long time ago, in the flourishing Italian town of La Citta Di Smeraldo, a man lived alone in his o ld, crumbling castle. He cared nothing for the banal pleasures of man, and the only joy he derived was from caring for his precious flowers in a small garden within the castle keep.Already shunned by many due to his hideous looks, the man kept to himself because he could not bear to hear the poisonous whispers and see the horrified stares of the townspeople whenever he ventured into the city. His appearance was such a shame to even himself that he wore a mask wherever he went, even in solitude. In doing so, he closed himself off from the world, both in body and in heart. He vowed to never open his heart to a world which had not done so to him. But one day, Fate intervened. While tending to his garden, the man noticed a girl in tattered clothing climb over the forbidding walls of his castle and into the keep. Looking around furtively, she picked some flowers before vanishing the way she came. Naturally, the man was furious. Determined to catch the girl, he stayed awake throughout the night, keeping watch on his garden. But he was only human, so when the first fingers of dawn’s light began to show, and the girl was nowhere to be seen, he closed his eyes and in doing so let down his guard. When he woke, more of his flowers were missing. This continued for several days, and as time passed anger turned into curiosity. Who was she? Why did she take his flowers? So one day, when he discovered her stealing from his garden again, he decided to get some answers. Donning a cloak, he followed her back to her village, only to see her selling his flowers because her family was poor, and she had no other way to put food on the table. The man knew what that was like. To have no alternative, and no one else to turn to. He lived that life every day. And so it was then that the man, his anger softened by empathy, decided to help the girl instead. The flowers he’d been growing so far had been for his own satisfaction and enjoyment, and while they were beautiful, they were pale shades compared to the ones that now blossomed in the rich loam of his garden, nourished by the man’s care, but also by his budding love for the girl. In his heart, he knew that he wanted to show up in front of her. Confess his feelings. Hand her a bouquet of the flowers he’d grown. Tell her that no matter what the world threw at her, he’d be there for her. Shower her with the same love he reserved only for his flowers. But he didn't. She would be scared of him, as so many others were, he thought. And so he could only hide and watch as she stole his flowers, as well as his heart. But with time, even that was not enough.He had to tell her he loved her. In order to make up for his ugliness, he thought, he’d have to grow the most beautiful flower he’d ever grown, in the hopes that if he presented it to her she would fall in love with him. He focused all his attention on one flower, even as the rest of his garden died, devoid of care and nourishment. When he finished, he was completely spent. There were no other flowers in his garden, save the one. But its beauty eclipsed even a hundred others combined. It glowed in the moonlight, a stunning shade of turquoise with petals of pearlescent green. Now all that was left was for her to sneak into his garden again, he thought. But the girl did not come. As he waited for her to return, the flower wilted, and all his work was for naught. Anxious, he visited the village she lived in, only to see that she had died. The man was devastated, and before long, he died of a broken heart. It was said that if you listened hard enough, you can still hear anguished cries emanating from the castle walls as he calls out her name. ... read more
